Jim McElwaine is a professor emeritus of music at the State University of New York. He now teaches at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, where he is designing new graduate studies in Composition And Production for the CIty University of New York. He conceived and founded one of the first academic degree programs in popular music composition – the renowned Studio Composition program at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College – SUNY in 1986. His professional writing and performing credits include more than 700 recordings on major and independent labels; multiple Grammy and Tony nominations; gold and platinum recordings; two Broadway and 13 Off Broadway orchestrations; and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Orchestration (Goblin Market, 1983).
He has collaborated with Joseph Papp, Charles Ludlam, Steven Spielberg, Dean Irby, Jim Henson, Garrison Keillor, Max Morath, Barry Keating, Des McAnuff, Howard Porter, Will Lee, Chris Hills, Cuba Gooding, Sr., Camille Saviola, Man Parrish, Mike Brecker, Randy Brecker, John Kilgore, Robbie Kilgore, Tinker Barfield, Bob Berg, Ray Mantilla, Ronnie Cuber, Jimi Tunnell, Joe Ferry, Jimmy Young, Janice Pendarvis, Armeloa McQueen, The Temptations, Nairobi Sailcat, Mark Berry, Luico Hopper, Danny Weiss, Raul Rodriguez, Mike Erato, Orchid Spangiafora, Rob Schwimmer, T.
